Introducing Group Chats in ChatGPT

Functional Scope and Availability

ChatGPT Group Chats is a collaborative session mechanism introduced by OpenAI to extend single-user AI interactions into shared workspaces involving multiple participants. The feature is currently available only to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team subscribers; ChatGPT Enterprise users are not included in the initial rollout.

Core Capabilities and Interaction Model

• All group members share a single context window; ChatGPT generates responses based on the full group chat history—not just individual messages;
• Participants can @-mention others or ChatGPT directly, enabling role-aware targeted interaction;
• Any member may edit or delete any message (including those sent by others); edit timestamps are retained but editors remain anonymous;
• Full conversation history is visible to all group members but cannot be exported, and no dedicated archival or API access is provided;
• Third-party integrations (e.g., Code Interpreter, Browsing), multimodal inputs (images/files), and custom GPTs are unsupported in group chats.

Technical Constraints and Limitations

• Maximum group size is 10 members (including the creator);
• Backend remains powered by the GPT-4 series (default model: gpt-4-turbo-2024-04-09), with no version-specific upgrade announced;
• No granular permission controls (e.g., read-only roles, message approval workflows) or enterprise-grade audit logging/SSO support;
• Official integrations with platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams have not been released.
