OpenAI’s Cybersecurity Grant Program provides funding and technical resources to global research teams and security practitioners to advance trustworthy, production-ready AI applications in threat detection, automated response, and vulnerability analysis.
Program Scope and Objective
The OpenAI Cybersecurity Grant Program is a dedicated initiative targeting frontline cybersecurity defenders. Its core objective is to accelerate the engineering deployment of AI technologies—particularly LLMs and reasoning models—in operational defense use cases, not theoretical or offensive research.
Supported Areas and Representative Directions
- Eligible recipients include academic labs, open-source security projects, non-profit security organizations, and enterprise red/blue teams;
- Priority areas include: LLM-based log anomaly reasoning (e.g., integrated with Elastic SIEM or Wazuh log streams), AI-assisted binary/firmware vulnerability discovery (compatible with Ghidra/IDA plugin architectures), and adversarially robust SOC automation workflows (aligned with MITRE ATT&CK);
- Explicitly excluded: AI-powered offensive tooling, zero-day weaponization, or evasion technique development.
Implementation Mechanism
- Grants range from $50,000 to $200,000, awarded for 6–12 month durations;
- In addition to funding, grantees receive prioritized OpenAI API quotas, customized access to GPT-4 Turbo and o1-preview models, and adversarial testing feedback from OpenAI’s security red team;
- All outputs—including code, evaluation benchmarks, and deployment documentation—must be open-sourced under Apache 2.0 or MIT license and undergo self-assessment against NIST SP 800-218 (Secure Software Development Framework).
